Berdych through, Haas and Danai out
World #10 Tomas Berdych sailed through into the final eight of the Thailand Open, but high-ranked Tommy Haas and local host favorite Danai Udomchoke lost in two straight sets on Thursday night.
Berdych took less than an hour to beat Misha Zverev of Germany 6-1, 6-4 on Thursday night.
Haas, the current German #2, played in the afternoon session but surprised the crowd by losing to the unseeded Nicolas Mahut of France in a tight match 4-6, 4-6.
Another big match of the day saw Benjamin Becker start off strongly and outplay the home favorite Danai 6-2, 6-3
“I played aggressively enough and could control the game very early on. I am happy that I won today even though I knew the crowd supported Danai,” said Becker.
Meanwhile Danai admitted that he lost to a better player whom he defeated 6-2 during a training session a few days ago.
“In practice, he didn’t serve well so I had a chance to return his second serve. Today he had a very good first serve and deserved to win.”
